The modern world is fast-paced and full of change. So much of our lives is now digital, with limitless potential for connection contributing to a sense of always being on and never being able to switch off. Life is constant noise, which is why so many people crave more than just a brief escape. Finding solace, self-discovery, and solitude has become one of the most important things for travellers, particularly for those travelling alone.

Solo travel has always been about resetting and recharging your spirit. For the modern nomad, seeking to shut out the noise and escape the relentless connectivity of the modern world, a combination of remote locations and personal mindfulness is necessary. Enter a retreat that combines hiking and self-discovery, one that immerses you in nature and sends you on a journey into yourself. You won’t just reach the top of the mountain (although you will do that too), you’ll clear your mind and find clarity in body and soul.

So before you board a cruise in Southampton or jump on a plane to a Caribbean island, think about a genuine alternative. Whether you are a veteran hiker or new to solo treks, packing your bags for an outdoor adventure that combines hiking and mindfulness will nurture both body and mind.

The Power of Solo Travel

Once seen as something unappealing, solo travel has surged in popularity over the last few years. It is a wonderful way to find independence and personal growth, offering great opportunities to focus on the things that are most important to you and to set your own pace as you explore the world. It also helps to rid your adventures of distractions, giving you the freedom to navigate the unfamiliar and unexpected in your own way.

A solo trek takes these benefits even further with the addition of a physical challenge and a deeper connection to the natural world. As you hike through the world by yourself you will be far more aware of the sights, sounds, and smells of the world around you, forcing you to be more present, and encouraging you to let your inner voice be heard more clearly.

Why Mindfulness Matters

This sense of awareness of your own inner commentary and of the world around you is at the heart of the practice of mindfulness, and why combining this practice with a hiking retreat is so effective. By practising mindfulness while you take on trails and mountains, you will develop a greater sense of gratefulness and appreciation for the natural world and become more in sync with the rhythms of nature. Even the simplest things, like putting one foot in front of the other, can become meditative, and help you on your journey to inner peace and contentment.

Mindful hiking forces you to focus; first on each step, then on the sounds, smells, and sensations of the trail, and then on the journey and the destination itself. As you feel the wind on your skin and listen to the sound of the birds in the trees (or even just your own heartbeat) you will find your cares floating away, while the physical challenge of the hike keeps you grounded and present in the moment.

Choosing Your Destination

Choosing where to go for a hiking and mindfulness retreat should be something you take your time over. Not all hiking destinations are created equal and it is important to find somewhere with the right combination of natural beauty, serene atmosphere, and great hiking trails that will allow you to fully disconnect from the chaos of everyday life.

  • Patagonia, Chile/Argentina – Patagonia straddles both Chile and Argentina, a liminal space filled with towering peaks, expansive glaciers, and crystal-clear lakes. This awe-inspiring landscape is perfect for disconnecting from the modern world and challenging yourself.

Preparing for Your Retreat

  • Set Your Intention – Intention is the key to mindfulness, so before you put on your walking boots and head out the door it is important to take a moment to reflect on what you want to achieve. Is your goal simply to take a break from modern life, or is there something deeper you want to find? Setting your intention will help provide a set of purpose for your retreat.
  • Pack Light, but Mindfully – Bring the essentials, but don’t bring more than you need. Minimalism and mindfulness go hand in hand, and the less stuff you bring with you the easier you’ll find carrying your bags! Of course, it is still important that you bring appropriate clothing for the environment you’ll be in, as well as any emergency supplies you might need. And don’t forget to bring a yoga mat or blanket to give you a space to meditate on your trip.
  • Leave Your Tech Behind – Most modern mindfulness retreats are about disconnecting from the digital, so try and avoid bringing too much tech with you. You’ll probably want to bring a phone, at least for emergencies, but otherwise leave your devices at home.
  • Plan Your Route – When you are hiking solo it is important to be prepared. So plan and map out your route in advance, identify places you can stop for rest, shelter, and supplies, and be sure to let someone know your plans before heading out.

A solo adventure that combines mindfulness and hiking is an incredible chance to reset your mind and challenge your body. It is a great way to step away from the noise and stress of modern life and nurture your spirit in the vast expanse of nature.
