This is the new 2009 model of the very popular lightweight womens Pinnacle.
There have been various improvements to last years model, which now includes a new breathable back system, new spacer mesh on hip belts, new hip belts pockets, improved Compacktor system, longer haul loop and of course new colours.
This is probably the best lightweight pack on the market, for those who are ready to move away from 'hard' framed rucksacks onto foam based 'frameless'. The key with using a pack like this is to ensure your base weight (weight of contents, minus, food, fuel and clothing worn) is as far below 10kg as you can make it. Then the additional capacity can expand and absorb the extras without compromising the structural integrity and balance when the bag is full.
That said, I've carried the maximum weight in this pack (18kg) easily up the Lairig Ghru (after visiting the flesh pots of Aviemore) and found it was still very stable. Disciplined packing is the key with frameless packs. They are not as unforgiving as framed packs, and so you soon build up the right technique with practice, creating a neat tube through the shape with no lumps sticking out.
The 2009 improvements make this pack very desirable. A breathable mesh back running down the spine of the pack will add just a little more comfort, in both the carrying and the moisture control. The new hip belt mesh, adds a small amount of padding for comfort and the new pockets are just perfect for camera, phones, GPS, snacks, hat and gloves.
The central roll top clip has also been moved further down the bag, which means when the pack is half full, more tension is created when rolling the top down, so will keep it shut tight.
There is no top pocket with this style of pack. However I've found that I don't miss it much, as instead I place all my usual small items, coins, keys and paperwork in a small roll top bag which is the last thing to pack, stays waterproof and if a bright colour, is easy to find!
The woven fabric material is Dyneema based as before, and this has proven itself to be lightweight, bombproof and durable over the last few years. It also doesn't absorb water anything like traditional rucksack fabrics, and thus will (a) dry quicker, and more importantly (b) weigh less when wet!
